Having a solid portfolio is the backbone of getting a job in the creative industry. But sometimes, your portfolio can work against you. Are you cramming too much work into your book?

I’ve sat through portfolio reviews and had my eyes glaze over in looking over page after page of similar work. Plus, by the time I was done, I couldn’t even remember any of the good work. The point is not to show everything you’ve worked on, but to communicate that you can crack a creative challenge — and have done it more than once.

I’ve sat across the conference table from hundreds of nervous candidates interviewing for creative positions. The process can be hard for the interviewee, but it also can be a real pain for the creative director as well. Often, I am pressed for time and I really appreciate those who come to the interview prepared. Here’s a list of five things that can kill a creative interview and how to avoid them.
